Who We Are

The Hillsdale American Legion is made up of veterans who believe that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. We are soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. Simply, we are men and women who love our country and dedicate ourselves to serving the community.

Our mission is to continue a life of service by helping veterans, supporting their families, and strengthening the community we call home. Whether it’s organizing local events, lending a hand to a neighbor in need, or honoring the memory of those who gave everything, we strive to be a steady presence of dedication and goodwill in Hillsdale County.

We host community gatherings, ceremonies, and volunteer projects that bring people together and remind us all of the values we share — duty, honor, and commitment. We work to ensure that every veteran feels supported and that every generation understands the cost and meaning of freedom.

We are a group of veterans who care deeply about one another, about Hillsdale, and about the future of our nation. United by service and guided by gratitude, we continue to serve proudly together.

Our Constitution:

For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes:

To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.

To maintain law and order.

To foster and perpetuate a One Hundred Percent Americanism.

To preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the Great Wars.

To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, State, and Nation.

To combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses.

To make right the master of might.

To promote peace and good will on earth.

To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy.

To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness

Leighr A. Wright

Our namesake, Leighr A. Wright, was a 19-year-old Hillsdale local who tragically lost his life during the sinking of the Tuscania. In 1918, this ship was attacked by German U-boats, leading to the heartbreaking loss of over 200 souls. To this day, we proudly continue to honor the legacy and memory of Leighr A. Wright, ensuring his sacrifice is never forgotten.
